Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: 9/11 Day of Service Blood Drive

Every week, Patch will spotlight volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley courtesy of Volunteer New York!.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Lower Hudson Valley, courtesy of Volunteer New York!. This is a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

9/11 Day of Service Blood Drive

Each year, Volunteer New York! hosts a blood drive on behalf of the New York Blood Center during our annual 9/11 Day of Service event at Westchester County Center. Blood donations help local hospitals maintain stable blood supplies for patients who depend on transfusions every day, and anyone between 16 and 76 can donate blood! Blood donors must register prior to giving blood.
Date: 9/10; appointments available 12-6 p.m., registration required

9/11 Day Kits for Kids

Volunteers are needed to assist The Blue Resource Table with assembling and delivering kits for Peekskill scholars between the ages of 5-18. These kits contain goodies, hygiene supplies, and school supplies. On September 9, the volunteer group with the largest turnout will win a bowling party for the group. On September 11, volunteers will begin the day with a moment of silence and unity prayer before venturing into the community to hand-deliver the kits to kids.

9/11 Day Community Clothes Sorting

The Sharing Shelf is seeking volunteers to help sort donated clothing that will be distributed to children and families in need. Volunteers must be 18+ to sign up alone; volunteers ages 14-17 may be signed up as part of an adult's family, group, or team. Pre-registration is required and no walk-ins are allowed.

Career Clothes Sorting

Operation Prom's Prominent Pathways is a career and workforce development program offered to students. To help them prepare for their careers, each student receives free clothing. Volunteers can help sort and display these clothes, and they are encouraged to bring their own professional clothing for both young men and women. Volunteers must be able to stand for periods of time, lift boxes under 15 pounds, and move garment racks.
Date: 9/11 from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Community Closet Volunteers

Mend By Me's Community Closet is a free resource where gently used clothing and household textiles are given a second life and shared back with the community. Caring volunteers are needed to help greet guests, assist shoppers, restock items, and support with checkout. Volunteers will create a warm, dignified experience for guests. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially encouraged to participate!
Date: 9/11 from 2:30-7:15 p.m.

Rosh Hashanah Friendly Visit and Package Delivery

DOROT's Rosh Hashanah Package Delivery brings hundreds of older adults and volunteers together to share warmth and companionship. Volunteers are needed for a 30-45 minute social visit with an older neighbor while delivering a thoughtful, seasonal care package provided by DOROT. This is a great opportunity for individuals, families with children over 10, and adult pairs.
