Jenkins signs Westchester County tax relief for veterans, first responders (midhudsonnews.com) — White Plains homeowners who are veterans, active-duty combat-zone service members, or surviving spouses of fallen first responders could soon see significant cuts to their county property tax bills. New Westchester laws, signed in White Plains, boost exemptions up to full relief for some disabled veterans and sizable breaks for others, starting with assessment rolls on or after October 1, 2026.
2. MTA adds extra 'leaf peeper' Metro-North express trains from Grand Central for peak fall foliage viewing — running every weekend to Poughkeepsie through Nov. 8 (secretnyc.co) — White Plains riders will see a new 7:32 a.m. Harlem Line express from North White Plains that stops in town before running nonstop to Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central, plus broader schedule tweaks. On weekends, added 'Leaf Peeper' trains from Grand Central give residents easy access to Hudson Valley foliage through November 8, all at off-peak fares and bookable via the MTA TrainTime app.
3. Golf Competes at Columbia Autumn Invitational (fordhamsports.com) — White Plains will host college golfers when Fordham's team returns to action October 12 at the Metropolis Intercollegiate, held at Metropolis Country Club. The Rams are coming off a 12th-place finish at the Columbia Autumn Invitational in Lake Placid, where several players posted strong individual rounds and look to build momentum heading into the local tournament.
4. 250 Years Ago, a Cannonball Beheaded a Hessian Soldier. Did He Become the Headless Horseman? (military.com) — White Plains' Revolutionary War history is back in the spotlight as historians revisit a grisly 1776 Hessian death near town that may have inspired Washington Irving's Headless Horseman. With the battle's 250th anniversary this month, Westchester County is hosting commemorations while museums explore how local military events evolved into one of America's most famous ghost stories.
