600 SQUARE FOOT MURAL DEBUTS AT RICHARD J. BAILEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN WHITE PLAINS

A giant 600-square-foot mural depicting storybook characters drawn by fourth, fifth and sixth graders was unveiled recently at the Richard J. Bailey Elementary School. The mural, which debuted on June 22, decorates the upper third of the walls above the library bookcases and was the work of artist Candace L. Winter, who collaborated and guided the children.

Characters from many books, including Stuart Little, Winnie-the-Pooh, James and the Giant Peach, Harry Potter, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, are featured on the mural. The children drew many of the characters, which Winter then transferred onto the walls of the library. She also painted the scenery and several of the characters that appear on the wall.

Librarian Melissa Iamonico initiated the project when she saw the walls of the library needed painting. Inspired by Winter’s mural at the Ardsley Library she contacted the artist through Miriam Bernabei, Greenburgh 7 Director of the Arts.
