Music Conservatory of Westchester Names New Dean of Students and Faculty

Also announces appointments of Assistant Dean and Chief Operating Officer

Music Conservatory of Westchester (MCW), a nonprofit community music school located in White Plains, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sarah Wetherbee to the position of Dean of Students and Faculty, a key leadership role at the school.  Also appointed to new positions are Dr. Justin Stanley, Assistant Dean of Students and Faculty, and Mack Cunningham, Chief Operating Officer.  

Dr. Wetherbee (of Sleepy Hollow), joined MCW’s staff as Assistant Dean of Students and Faculty in 2008. She also teaches violin at the school.  In her new role as Dean of Students and Faculty, she will supervise75 faculty members, three administrative staff positions, and is responsible for program development and operations, as well as student recruitment and retention. Her extensive experience and exemplary dedication to the field of music education and performance heavily influenced the Conservatory’s decision to appoint Wetherbee to this demanding position.

“Sarah has the vision, expertise and experience to guide our programs forward,” said Jean Newton, Executive Director. “I am confident that our students and faculty will thrive under her leadership.”

Wetherbee previously served as an administrator and faculty member at the Levine School of Music and Capitol Hill Arts Workshop in Washington DC, and on faculty at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and Frederick Community College in Maryland. Additionally, she has performed with numerous ensembles across the United States and Europe including the National Symphony, Richmond Symphony, National Gallery and National Philharmonic orchestras; Fiori Musicali, which she co-founded and directed, Ives String Quartet, and the Spole to and Schleswig Holstein festivals. Wetherbee received her bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and her doctorate from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Wetherbee has appointed Justin Stanley (of Manhattan) as MCW’s new Assistant Dean of Students and Faculty. Dr. Stanley joined the faculty in 2009, teaching clarinet and chamber music. He also teaches at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. and Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ. An experienced performer, Dr. Stanley has played throughout the United States at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. and Orchestra Hall in Chicago, IL. He received his bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance and music education from The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, his master’s degree from Yale University, and his doctorate from the University of Michigan.

The Music Conservatory of Westchester is also proud to recognize Mack Cunningham (of Rye) as the newly appointed Chief Operating Officer.  Cunningham has dedicated more than four years to the Music Conservatory as Director of Administration and Finance. His new position responsibilities include budget management, administrative personnel, real estate assets, and staff and faculty campus voice, data, and business continuity technology operations.  He previously worked on Wall Street as a Director of Hybrid Markets at Kellogg Group LLC.

Founded in 1929, the Music Conservatory of Westchester (www.musicconservatoryonline.org) is a non-profit community music school providing outstanding programs in music and music therapy for children,teens and adults of all ages and abilities. 
Their comprehensive programs include individual instrumental and vocal instruction, performing ensembles, theory classes, music therapy, student performances, master classes, workshops, and more. The Conservatory’s concert series of faculty recitals and children’s concerts is offered free to the public. Each year, MCW provides more than $100,000 in scholarship assistance to financially deserving students. Their Music Therapy program provides music therapy and adapted instruction to over 1,600 individuals with disabilities, in collaboration with 27 schools and agencies. The Conservatory’s 36,000-square-foot facility in White Plains features an acoustically designed Recital Hall, 43 teaching studios, dedicated music therapy unit, two dance studios and administrative offices.  The Steffi Nossen Dance School and Westchester Choral Society are in residence in the building, and numerous other organizations use the facilities for performances and events. The Conservatory is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, and is a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.
