I've been a member of the YMCA in White Plains for nearly a decade. I've seen several transitions in leadership - and equipment.
It's a remarkable organization. It provides services for people from all walks of life, long retired fitness buffs, families, unemployed fellows who need a room.
I joined in 2000 because they have locker room and laundry service. But it also lacked the pretension of other fitness franchises. I could be serious about exercising, without worrying about my appearance. No pizza parties in the gym on Friday night!

But it's the staff who make the Y. I remember in one sports club I had joined, the staff seemed to be more interested in meeting dates than helping people get fit. At the Y, the staff is always willing to give some assistance.
And the program directors are always receptive to suggestions.

I didn't expect to make friends there. But over time, I've run into lots of interesting people, and the regulars who know each other even take some time to informally gather.
The White Plains Y is one of those organizations that makes my life richer. I'm glad it's here. It's not the only excellent organization out there in this wonderful city, but it deserves all the praise it gets.
