Every November, Peekskill does something wonderful. Hundreds of our neighbors lace up their shoes, strap turkeys into strollers and backpacks, and then run or walk right through the heart of downtown. Our runners aren’t aiming for a record-breaking finish time; they are racing to feed a family down the street.
That's the Turkey Trot! The entry fee is a frozen turkey, chicken or ham, and after our last runner crosses the finish line, that food is on its way to someone who really needs it.
This is one of our favorite days of the year, but it's also one of our most necessary. Food insecurity in Peekskill doesn't take a holiday, and the weeks before Thanksgiving are when Fred's Pantry sees some of its highest need. The Turkey Trot meets that need head-on. Every turkey donated is paired with a special grocery bag of holiday staples, so each Fred's Pantry guest leaves with a full Thanksgiving meal (not just the centerpiece).
