CITY HALL or TAMMANY HALL

268 words you MUST read before voting for Mayor, November 7! Things are not what they seem in City Hall, skim milk masquerades as cream.

City Hall or Tammany Hall

Recently, in a closed door meeting, the all Democratic Party Common Council appointed former City Democratic Chair Elizabeth Shollenberger and former Roach Campaign Treasurer to a 10-year term as a City Judge. The controversial appointment has generated national media coverage raising serious ethical questions about Mayor Thomas Roach.

Shollenberger was not one of the nine recommended candidates by the Judicial Review Committee. At the time of the appointment she suffered from serious medical issues that any casual observer would have seen would impede her ability to do the job. Mark Elliott, Mayor Roach’s only appointee to the Judicial Review Committee, said “No reasonable person could have looked at her as I did and thought that she could finish her 10-year term”.

Not surprisingly, after just one week, Shollenberger went on the first of several medical leaves from her $175,500 position. Thereafter, the Chief Administrative Judge suspended her from performing her judicial duties.

Even though Mayor Roach recused himself from voting on the appointment, he orchestrated the entire process and urged the Common Council to support her. Moreover, Roach worked with Democratic Party Chair, Tim James, Shollenberger’s husband, during the judicial selection process. What could be more inappropriate than that?

The Shollenberger scandal is only one of a number of “political” decisions rocking City Hall.

When does political cronyism become political wrongdoing? Does Mayor Roach take his orders from political bosses at the expense of City taxpayers? Is “Tammany Hall style” politics what White Plains residents want?

White Plains deserves better than this!
