Clearing Up on Mother's Day: White Plains Weekend Weather

Rain should abate, forecasters say. Not that the weekend will be altogether glorious, but the probability of rain will be halved before gusts blow the clouds away Sunday afternoon.

"While it still looks a bit unsettled, we should see some sunshine," said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "Saturday looks to see a lot of clouds, with a few spotty showers possible… but we should also see some breaks of sun. A round of scattered showers look likely Saturday night into early Sunday morning… but the winds should shift out of the northwest Sunday morning, and usher in some sunshine and a breeze for much of the day on Sunday."

It's a good thing, AccuWeather.com meterologists say. A rainfall deficit of 3-6 inches remains around the New York City area. Replenishing the soil moisture this spring could be important for avoiding significant drought during the summer, with hotter and drier weather in the forecast.

Here's what the National Weather Service predicts for southern Westchester County:

• Today: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. High in the low 50s. East wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
• Tonight: A chance of showers. Patchy fog after 4am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low in the upper-40s. East wind 9 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
• Saturday: A chance of showers. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high in the low-60s. Southeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
• Saturday Night: A chance of showers, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
• Sunday: A chance of showers, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high in the low-60s. Southwest wind 8 to 15 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
• Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low in the upper-40s.
