Coronavirus: Data Shows Westchester Curve Is Flattening

A little more than one-third of the deaths in the county have been residents of nursing homes or assisted-living facilities.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Even though the number of confirmed positive cases of the new coronavirus in Westchester County is rising, the county executive said the data shows the curve is flattening in the county. According to the state, as of Tuesday, 20,191 Westchester residents have tested positive for the virus.

County Executive George Latimer said the number of active cases is dropping — 10,224 — meaning more people have recovered or completed a period of isolation.

"It's down from where we were about a week ago," he said. "It shows that we are making strides here in Westchester" and that social distancing is working.

Latimer said the number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus is holding steady, at about 10 percent to 11 percent.

He said that is well below the point at which the hospitals would be overtaxed.

The number of newly reported deaths is 596 in the county, Latimer said. He said that 37 percent of deaths in the county have been of people in nursing homes or assisted-living facilities.

According to the state, Yonkers still has the most confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 2,937. New Rochelle is second with 1,287 and Mount Vernon is third with 1,281.
