Coronavirus Infections Continue Increasing In Westchester

The county executive said it's not at the point where things have to be shut down again.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Coronavirus cases continue to grow in Westchester County, but it's not yet what County Executive George Latimer would call severe.

During his weekly news briefing Monday, Latimer said the percentage of people testing positive for the virus has increased but it's not at a point where things have to start shutting down again.

He said active cases of the virus totaled 1,470 as of Sunday. He said at the end of May there were 1,257 active cases, and that decreased to less than 500 for the ends of the months of June, July and August.

Latimer said the rate of infection has increased from where it was at the end of the summer. On the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, the rate of infection was 0.9 percent, he said. As of Sunday, it was up to 2 percent. Hospitalizations are relatively stable.

Latimer said, however, the numbers "are not giving us comfort."

"They are not spiking the way there were in the spring, but they are not flattening and continuing to go down," he said.

"We are not fearmongering and we are not sugar-coating," Latimer said. "We are trying to give a realistic picture of where we are."

Here is the map of positive and active cases of the coronavirus broken down by municipality.
