Coronavirus: Westchester County Receives Morgue Trailer

The county executive said this was nothing he's ever experienced in public or private life.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — At his daily news conference updating the county on the new coronavirus outbreak, Westchester County Executive George Latimer said there have been 211 deaths related to the virus as of Sunday. He said the number of county residents being hospitalized is 377, 345 of which are in Westchester hospitals.

To date, 718 people have been hospitalized.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday at his news conference that there were 14,294 confirmed positive cases of the new coronavirus in Westchester, up 571 from Sunday.

The latest number put Westchester behind Nassau County with more than 15,000 cases and ahead of Suffolk County with about more than 13,000.

The larger numbers of cases continue to affect the more populated communities, Latimer said.

Here are the top five communities:

  • Yonkers: 1,393
  • New Rochelle: 659
  • Mount Vernon: 583
  • Greenburgh: 568 (291 for unincorporated portion; 277 for the villages)
  • White Plains: 377

Latimer said that the county received a trailer from the state that will be used as a temporary morgue.

He said the county has more people dying at once than at any other time.

"There is a practical reality," Latimer said. "The rules do not allow for large funerals or large burial site services. We are now having to deal with a backlog of those who died.

"This is nothing I've ever experienced in my life," he said, either in public or private life.
