Could a For Sale by Owner Sign Attract Criminals?

Believe it or not, security experts consider real estate to be a high-risk profession.

Believe it or not, security experts consider real estate to be a high-risk profession. Unfortunately, in the past few years, realtors in Arkansas, Iowa, and Florida have been the victims of violent crime. Hundreds of realtors across the country have been robbed and assaulted. Many have been subjected to unwanted calls from strangers who have seen their photos and contact information in ads, websites, or on social media.

September is "Realtor Safety Month" and I just participated in a class offered by Keller Williams on personal safety. Various techniques for avoiding and dealing with potential problems were presented. Receiving this very important security training certainly raised my awareness of the risks people take when they try to sell their homes without a broker.
Consider this scenario: You've decided to sell your home on your own, so you put a sign on your lawn that says "For Sale By Owner" with your phone number on it. If you get a call from a potential buyer, you'll naturally discuss possible times to meet the caller to show your home. In a few minutes you've shared when you and your family are home, and when you're not.

Criminal activity in your home is a real issue for those who try to sell on their own. While criminals can prey on the most experienced realtors, the main difference between us and you is that we are aware of the risks and have the training and tools to minimize the threat. At Keller Williams, we screen potential buyers, both over the phone and in person, before showing your home. We have an office to use as safe, neutral territory for first-time meetings. We also collect lots of information - personal, financial, and more - to pre-screen for qualified buyers and minimize dangers and risks to your personal security.

When we do show your home, most likely you won't be there, which ensures the personal safety of you and your family. We also employ everything from the "buddy system" to high tech security tools to help keep us, and your valuables, safe and secure.
