Band Benefit Boosts Broadcaster

On Saturday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. some of the lower Hudson Valley’s best and brightest musical talent will perform a concert to benefit Westchester Public Radio, WDFH 90.3FM. The event includes performances by Phineas and the Lonely Leaves, Giant Cicada and Hope Machine. The event location is 31 Fullerton Ave. (off Midland Ave.) 2nd floor in Yonkers. There is on-street parking; refreshments will be available.

Space is limited and reservations are recommended at www.wdfh.org. A minimum $20.00 per person donation is requested (cash or check only at the door; credit cards online in advance) and larger donations are greatly appreciated. Donations are fully tax-deductible.

“As a service to the community and lower Hudson Valley artists, WDFH has been proud to broadcast many hours of performances they’ve recorded at our studios. We’re thrilled that these musicians are supporting the station through this event to boost our fundraising efforts. Without donations, we cannot survive,” said Marc Sophos, the station's founder and executive director.

Giant Cicada began as an extension of the partnership of the upright bass/vocal duo Jon Burr and Lynn Stein, playing the essence of song and minimalist arrangements. With the addition of violin, guitar, cajón drum, and bowed upright bass, the duo ventured further down the paths of pop, dance, world, and jazz and developed a vibrant new sound. Some members have already performed at WDFH as the Jon Burr Trio and the Lynn Stein Trio.

Hope Machine was born at a 2003 Woody Guthrie hootenanny and is named after a Guthrie quote: “About all a human being is, anyway, is a hoping machine.”  Their music is ever evolving and carries a message of hope, peace and freedom.  Hope Machine is an “official program” of the Woody Guthrie Foundation, and returns to WDFH after a performance earlier this year. This represents the Westchester performance of their “Woody Guthrie 100th Birthday Tour!” www.reverbnation.com/hopemachine.

Serving the lower Hudson River valley, WDFH is Westchester’s only public radio station and is operated solely by a small group of unpaid employees. The nonprofit and non-commercial station relies on donations from listeners, businesses and foundations. WDFH broadcasts at 90.3 FM, reaching central and northern Westchester, eastern Rockland and southern Putnam counties. Programming includes a free-form mix of pop, rock, jazz and folk plus locally hosted public affairs programs as well as news programming from the Pacifica Radio Network including Democracy Now and CounterSpin. Visit www.WDFH.org to access streaming audio, podcasts, program schedules and to learn about volunteering or making a tax-deductible contribution. For further information Email info@wdfh.org.
