Developed by African slaves in Brazil during the 16th century, Capoeira was designed as a martial art that would be used to fight for freedom. The slaves disguised it as a dance to prevent their owners from discovering that they were training. It comprises one of the richest manifestations of Brazilian culture, incorporating elements of sport, music, martial art and dance into a game of physical dialogue and expression. One of the most important elements in Capoeira is the flow of energy, set by the rhythm of Brazilian and African music instruments, always accompanying a Capoeira game. Capoeira gives it's practitioners many benefits, including coordination, balance, strength, body control and expression, flexibility, agility and most importantly - it's fun!
We invite everyone to come try it out for themselves and join us for Capoeira classes with Professor Cabeção on Sundays from 4:30-6:00 pm and Tuesdays from 7:45-9:00 pm in the Church House at White Plains Presbyterian Church, 39 North Broadway, White Plains NY.
