Serious Music, Serious Fun! The New Westchester Symphony Orchestra's Fall 2012 Concert
On Sunday, October 21 at 3pm, The New Westchester Symphony Orchestra ("NewWSO") will present well-known works by Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Handel, Ravel and more in the gallery space of ArtsWestchester, 31 Mamaroneck Ave, in downtown White Plains. The NewWSO has launched an innovative Kickstarter project to help fund this event.
The NewWSO was founded in November 2011 by Conductor Benjamin Niemczyk and adult-beginner bassist and Executive Director Belinda Kan as a community orchestra where musicians of all ages and abilities could come together to play the greatest works of music history without auditions or intense pressure to perform. After nine short months, the orchestra has grown to almost 40 members, attracting volunteer musicians from ages 15 - 85. Weekly rehearsals, which are open to the public, are held at the Music Conservatory of Westchester.
The October 21 program is an ambitious one for a group of avocational musicians, but the members of the NewWSO prove that you do not have to be a professional musician to play great music. All that is needed is the desire to play, and the results for the members and the audiences are inspiring and magical.
