Sisters of the Divine Compassion Present on Community Leadership Forum on Environmental Sustainability

Businesses and families, both commercial and residential, investing in sustainable technology for their building and home can make targeted changes with immediate local environmental impact and benefit financially from those changes. ‘Building renovation’ takes on a whole new interpretation when cutting edge technology influences upgrades that are environmentally sustainable.
Sponsored by The Sisters of the Divine Compassion in collaboration with the Divine Compassion Spirituality Center, Divine Compassion Social Justice Board and NY State Judicial Institute, this half-day Community Leadership Forum on Environmental Sustainability addresses the spirituality of stewardship for the earth, sustainable building practices including existing buildings and energy savings and campus land use best practices.
The forum addresses funding sources, credits and other incentives. Information is available about new developments in local and statewide legislation and policy, incentives to make smart energy choices.

With the aid of a grant from the Verizon Foundation, the Sisters have already done an environmental study, resulting in a conversion to more energy efficient lighting, the preliminary installation of motion sensors to control lighting usage, and creation of raingardens and bioswales as part of a rain water management and bio-retention system. The Verizon Foundation grant is consistent with the company’s commitment to environmentally conscious practices. "Technology is transforming how we think about and use energy," said Catherine Gasteyer, director of Verizon Government Affairs for Midstate NY and Connecticut. "The Sisters of the Divine Compassion have demonstrated their passionate commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability. They have made significant investments to transform their campus in innovative ways to manage energy usage. The Sisters are not stopping there, however. With the Community Leadership Forum on Environmental Sustainability they are bringing the important discussion of environmental policy to the larger community. Verizon shares their commitment and is thrilled to partner with them on the sustainability forum.”
The day’s program includes a complimentary luncheon at Mapleton at Good Counsel with a keynote speaker, and campus tours of greening efforts.
It takes place on October 23, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the New York State Judicial Institute at Pace University School of Law, 78 North Broadway, White Plains, NY. The event is free and open to the public.
