Latimer To Address Westchester Rise In New Coronavirus

The county executive will give his weekly news briefing on the virus Monday.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Rising new coronavirus numbers will be addressed Monday in Westchester County with "new action" to address a surge, according to a Facebook post by County Executive George Latimer.

"Bad news continues," the post Sunday by Latimer started out.

There were six deaths during the past week, while that was the same number for the entire month of August, he wrote. Hospitalizations are around 20 more than just two weeks ago.

Latimer said there were more than 1,000 active cases currently, with 42 active cases Aug. 9. The last time the county had 1,000 active cases was June 6. Active cases are people who are confirmed to be infected with the virus within the past two weeks but haven't cleared protocols yet.

"We will be taking some action tomorrow, within our authority, to address this surge," Latimer wrote.

He will be giving his weekly new coronavirus briefing at 2 p.m. Monday. It will be live streamed here.

"It comes at a time when many have Pandemic Fatigue and want to open up more of the society, and the business losses for some businesses are causing closures and collapse," he said.

Latimer addressed the "aggressive push back" from some people regarding enforcement methods to control the virus, adding that it appears some people don't want to sacrifice certain behaviors and social and personal connections.

He also said that science is being questioned if it "limits one's desired behavior."

"I guess whenever Science offers a dour reality, the tune of the Pied Piper entices many to follow him down to the river," Latimer wrote.
