Latimer Updates Westchester Coronavirus Numbers

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, while he is concerned about growing numbers of active coronavirus cases, looking at more than one set of data is vital to understanding whether there is an outbreak brewing.

At his Monday news conference, he said there has been more robust testing in the last couple of weeks and that is why many more cases are being seen.

"That number alone is concerning," Latimer said, "but I look for other indicators."

He said the county looks into whether the numbers are localized or scattered around the region. Additionally, the number of hospitalizations are factored in, as well as the number of deaths.

"We will know by multiple days of bad numbers, but we are not at that point," Latimer said.

No Westchester ZIP code has been in the top 20 of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's list of percentages of positive coronavirus tests since Tuesday when 10801 had 3 percent.

Latimer said the county hadn't received Sunday's coronavirus numbers. He said the numbers released for Saturday showed there were 38,475 confirmed positive cases of the new coronavirus to date.

There are 674 active cases.

About 5,500 tests were conducted, yielding 44 positive results for the day — less than 1 percent.

On Saturday, there were 26 people hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses.

Latimer said there was one fatality from Saturday, bringing the total to 1,457. He said it was the only fatality in the last 10 days.
