Lois Bronz Children's Center Celebrates Read Across America Day

Lois Bronz Children's Center celebrates Read Across America Day with community leaders.

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’s 115th birthday and to stress the value of reading, the Lois Bronz Children's Center hosted a Read Aloud for its students. March is also Women’s History Month and fittingly the Read Aloud featured many import female leaders in the state, county and community. Executive Director of the center, Dr. Marcia Lawrence invited State Senate Leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins; County Legislator, Alfreda Williams; Kathy Halas, Executive Director, Child Care Council; and Andrea Hamilton, Assistant Principal, Alexander Hamilton Jr/Sr High School, Elmsford to partake in the event. The books selected for five classrooms were, Remarkably You by Pat Zietlow Miller, Is Your Mama A Llama by Deborah Guarino, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. or I Am Enough by Grace Byers.

Dr. Lawrence stated, “All of our guests are not just leaders in the community but what they do in their respective area touches the lives of and impacts children and young people on a daily basis and we want to honor that. Most importantly, we want to stress the importance of reading to children from a very early age and help the children to see the fun and adventure reading can be.”

Although Read Across America day coincides with the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, who was born on March 2, 1904, Dr. Lawrence plans to invite people from the community in to read to the children a few times a year. Bringing in community leaders has many benefits. “It’s good for our children to be exposed to leaders in the community and good for the community to feel like they are a part of the center,” said Dr. Lawrence.
