New York City Design Center Inspires Architecture/Pre-Engineering Students
Students from two programs at the SWBOCES Center for Career Services got a peak into the world of high-end design

A group of students from the SWBOCES Architecture & Interior Design as well as the Pre-Engineering programs were inspired not only by the sheer size of Manhattan’s New York Design Center during an educational tour Oct. 20, but by the imaginative pieces of furniture on display and the eclectic assortment of fabric, carpeting and more that it offers to the consumer.
The Center takes up 16 floors and 500,000 square feet in professional showroom space, with everything from the classic, to the contemporary and avant-garde designs.
Organized by Architecture & Interior Design teacher Christine Ireland, who once worked in the building located at 200 Lexington Avenue, the students were first given a formal introduction to the historic building, which was built in 1926 and originally catered to department and retail store buyers.

They were then free to visit the various showrooms in small groups, taking photos of their favorite designs and keeping notes on what interested them.
“I think the inspiration that a lot of people have is shown through their work,” said Kat, a second-year Pre-Engineering student and a 12th-grader at Eastchester High School, referring to the many innovative designs she saw during the one-hour tour.

Pre-Engineering instructor Letizia Noce and guidance counselor Anna Macchia also accompanied the group on the tour.
“The students were inspired and excited to see what’s involved in designing and working with high-end furniture,” said Ms. Ireland. “They returned with lots of photos and were asking when our next trip would be. I think it was a great way to begin the school year!”
