The former Olympic Gold Medalist recently transitioned to Caitlyn Jenner.

A track and field award at Sleepy Hollow High School named after former Olympic Gold Medalist Bruce Jenner will not be renamed, even though the celebrity recently transitioned to Caitlyn Jenner, according to the school’s principal.

Carol Conklin-Spillane told Fios1News that the achievements for which Jenner was recognized in the creation of the award - namely winning the gold medal in the Olympic Decathlon in 1976 - were accomplished when Jenner was known as Bruce. The award honors excellence in track and field for the Sleepy Hollow High School team, where Jenner attended.

“It was a snap shot of that moment in time,” Conklin-Spillane told Fios1News. “And there’s a lot to be said about honoring the past.”

If Caitlyn Jenner were to request the award’s name be changed, Conklin-Spillane added that the school would consider that, and perhaps simply call it the Jenner Award.

School senior Daniel Elia, a recipient of the award in the past, said he is fine with whatever is decided.

“I feel pride in the award no matter what happens,” he told Fios1News.
