Parkinson's Disease Foundation Sheds Light on Apathy and Depression in Parkinson's with Online Seminar on Tuesday, June 14

WHAT: Apathy and depression are common symptoms of Parkinson's disease but often go unrecognized. Learn about these commonly misunderstood Parkinson's symptoms and get practical tips for coping with them by joining “Apathy or Depression: Which One Is It?” an online PD ExpertBriefing hosted by the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF). Qualifying health professionals may apply for free continuing education credits.
WHO: The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation® (PDF®) supports the scientific research and ideas that will improve the lives and futures of people who are touched by Parkinson’s. Since its founding in 1957, PDF has invested more than $157 million in research, education and advocacy programs. This PDF PD ExpertBriefing will be presented by Dawn Bowers, Ph.D., Professor of Neuropsychology at the University of Florida and Director, Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at McKnight Brain Institute in Gainesville, FL. Dr. Bowers is internationally known for her expertise in neuropsychology, memory disorders and emotion processing changes in Parkinson’s.
WHY: The medical community increasingly recognizes apathy as a common symptom of Parkinson’s, affecting about 40 to 60 percent of people living with the disease. Meanwhile, depression is also quite common and disabling, with about 60 percent of people with Parkinson’s experiencing mild or moderate depressive symptoms. The two symptoms often go overlooked, and when identified, can be difficult to distinguish from each other. This seminar will review the differences between apathy and depression and provide practical tips for coping.
