Play Resumes On 4 Renovated Westchester County Soccer Fields

WHITE PLAINS, NY — After 15 years of use, four synthetic-turf soccer fields, including three at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers and one at Saxon Woods Park in White Plains, have been renovated, allowing play to resume. Westchester County Executive George Latimer hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of Field 1 at Tibbetts Brook Park Thursday.

Latimer said, after years of heavy use, the renovated fields at these two Westchester County parks were in great need of repair and renovation.

"They look wonderful and now, under the current COVID guidelines, we are able to welcome players back to the field, so we are very excited about this reopening,” he said.

The new fields are equipped with a shock pad base to help reduce injuries to players. The infill is a mix of sand and thermoplastic elastomer, an extruded plastic product used as an alternative to crumb rubber.

The renovation project also included drainage and fencing improvements where needed. The fields are marked for regulation soccer, youth soccer and lacrosse.

The field at Saxon Woods Park was originally built in 2005; the three at Tibbetts Brook Park, in 2007.

Costs for the projects were approximately $1.2 million at Saxon Woods and $4 million at Tibbetts. The county’s Planning Department furnished the design for the project, and the Department of Public Works oversaw construction.

The fields began booking by groups and organizations in January prior to the pandemic shutdowns; several openings exist and can be reserved by calling the Westchester County Parks permit office at 914-231-4575.

The county said only bookings by organizations will be accepted — no individual bookings can be made. All organizations must submit their safety plan to the permit office prior to their reserved date.
