'Poverty Pulse' Data Reports will Expand Thanks To Grant For Westchester Children’s Association

WHITE PLAINS, NY —A helpful measure the challenge families in the region are facing just got a big boost from a hometown business.

Westchester Children’s Association has received a $4,000 grant from the Hudson Valley Credit Union Charitable Foundation to support the continued expansion of its Poverty Pulse initiative, the organization announced. The Westchester-based nonprofit said the quarterly report tracks economic challenges facing children and families across the county and has become a resource for nonprofit organizations and local government agencies.

According to Westchester Children’s Association, Poverty Pulse combines real-time insights from frontline nonprofit organizations with publicly available economic data to track trends in family economic stability. The organization said the reports highlight pressures including rising housing costs, food insecurity and childcare access, with the goal of helping policymakers, nonprofits and community leaders direct resources where they are needed.

"Economic fluctuations happen in real-time, but poverty data has historically been retrospective," said Limarie Cabrera, Director of Data, Operations & Finance at WCA. "With Poverty Pulse, we are moving beyond the lag of industry-standard reporting and providing current data that we believe will lead to better and more timely decisions for Westchester’s children and families."

Westchester Children’s Association said it expects the expanded initiative to engage 5 to 10 nonprofit and community partners contributing real-time insight on family economic hardship. The group also said it plans to produce quarterly Poverty Pulse updates and reports, reach thousands of community members, nonprofit leaders and policymakers through its data dashboards and digital publications, and support more than 100 nonprofit organizations that rely on WCA research and data to inform programs and secure funding.

The organization said the effort is also intended to strengthen policy discussions and community responses affecting the 208,000 children living in Westchester County. The grant is part of a larger $550,000 distribution from the HVCU Charitable Foundation to 80 nonprofits across its 13-county footprint, focusing on education, food, health and housing.

Founded in 1914, Westchester Children’s Association describes itself as the only independent child advocacy organization in Westchester County. The nonprofit said it uses data, research and community engagement to drive policy solutions focused on children’s health, safety and long-term well-being.
