Proposed Merger of Parishes Could Affect Three Churches in White Plains

In addition to the merger, Our Lady of Mount Carmel would close for good.

Three churches in White Plains could merge under the proposed merger of 38 additional parishes announced recently by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, the New York Times reports.

The mergers are a response to a shortage of priests, declining attendance and financial issues.

St. John the Evangelist, St. Bernard and Our Lady of Mount Carmel would all merge, the paper reports. In the proposal, Our Lady of Mount Carmel would close and no longer be used for regular services effective August.

According to the paper, in November, the Archdiocese announced the consolidation of 112 parishes, a decision that came after more than a year of deliberation. The recent announcement came directly from Cardinal Timothy M Dolan and other senior archdiocesan officials.

The parishes have until March 1 to respond to the cardinal with their concerns.
