Seniors and the Disabled Can Get Help with Medicaid Enrollment
Westchester Disabled on the Move is reenrolling people with disabilities, seniors and low-income residents in Westchester, Putnam and Orange

Yonkers NY – April 11, 2024 – With one in four people living paycheck to paycheck in the Hudson Valley, more families than ever before are in need of healthcare coverage.
Westchester Disabled on the Move Inc. is now reenrolling people with disabilities, seniors and low-income residents in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange, free of charge.
Many people who rely on Medicaid could lose their coverage if they fail to reenroll. COVID protections for those on Medicaid have ended so they are now required to re-enroll in the program, but many people don’t know this and are losing coverage.

More than 1 million people have been dropped from Medicaid since COVID protections ended. Most got dropped for not filling out paperwork.
Westchester Disabled on the Move recently received a grant from Community Service Society (CSS) and Mother Cabrini Health Foundation as part of the Keep New York Covered (KNYC) program, a network of enrollment agencies that conduct marketing and outreach about how New Yorkers can keep their health coverage after the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Darla Lao Paula, Lead Medicaid Facilitated Enroller for WDOM, said that families who depend on Medicaid and Child Health Plus may need to re-register for their health insurance. She said that WDOMI can help with all the forms.
Lao-Paula, said that there are many reasons why people might require help reenrolling. She said that one senior citizen who had enrolled during the pandemic did not know how to complete the forms. Another who was blind was unable to complete the forms without assistance.
“One consumer is legally blind and couldn't complete the forms by herself, so we completed her forms and sent them to social services, she received her notice of decision in the mail and called back to let us know how grateful she was for our help,” she said.
She added, “Another consumer was very anxious about the renewal package for his Medicaid coverage. He didn't know where to start because he got his Medicaid during the pandemic, and this was his first-time renewing. He was very grateful for our services.”
