Street Trash Compactors Being Tried in Downtown White Plains

The solar-powered units can hold five times more garbage than regular trash cans.

The new face of garbage might have been just rolled out in White Plains.

The city’s Department of Public Works is trying out three Big Belly Solar garbage units in the downtown area.

The receptacles can hold five times the amount of garbage as the standard trash cans by compacting the garbage that’s been deposited.

As the name suggests, the compactors are solar-powered and there is a foot pedal, allowing for no-touch opening.

Because the garbage units hold so much, city sanitation crews can, for example, empty them on Friday and not have to come back until Monday, making them efficient and earth-friendly, official said.

Test locations will be as follows:

  1. Renaissance Plaza
  2. Corner of Martine Avenue & Court Street
  3. Corner of Mamaroneck Avenue & Martine Avenue

Those spots were chosen because they were identified as high volume trash locations.
