Valhalla District Appoints Acting Superintendent
A special meeting was held over the holiday break.

VALHALLA, NY — Over the holiday break, the Valhalla school district board of education appointed an acting superintendent. Christina Howe, the assistant superintendent for business, became the acting superintendent.
She took over from Superintendent Karen Geelan, according to a note posted on the district's website.
"The board held a special meeting on Dec. 29 and unanimously voted to immediately appoint Mrs. Howe to the chief position in the absence of Superintendent of Schools Karen Geelan," the note said.

The agenda found on the board's website had the approval of a resolution that suspended "Employee 1594" with full pay and benefits that was effective Dec. 29.
That was followed by a resolution appointing Howe as acting superintendent.

In response to a Facebook post about the appointment of Howe, the school district said it recognized the unusual nature of the announcement and understood that the public had questions.
"At this time, as this is a confidential personnel matter, for legal reasons we are unable to address specific questions," the Facebook post said. "We intend to share additional information publicly when possible."
Howe has served Valhalla Schools as its business official since 2011. She has more than 30 years of experience working in education.
