Volunteer to Help a Child to Read on MLK Day
United Way seeks volunteers of all ages to assemble reading-kits for children in low-income Westchester communities.
Honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by joining the United Way and Girl Scout Troop 1033 in assembling reading kits for underprivileged children. The activity will take place on Monday, Jan. 16, at the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson building, 2 Great Oak Lane, Pleasantville.
Volunteers can choose one of two shifts - 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or noon to 1:30 p.m. – to put together bags of donated children’s books and other educational materials that United Way will distribute to needy local children.
The annual book drive, part of United Way’s United2Read children’s literacy initiative, addresses one of our community’s most pressing problems: 61% of low-income children do not have one children’s book in the home and come to kindergarten already academically behind.
