WCC Holds Open House Today for Students Interested in High-Demand Sciences

Westchester Community College is inviting students interested in high demand careers in Engineering Science and Technology, or Environmental Studies or Environmental Science, to an Open House on Wednesday, July 16.

Two sessions are available from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. The event in the Technology Building Student Lounge on the Valhalla campus at 175 Grasslands Road will include faculty members from these academic programs along with representatives from companies interested in future graduates. Classes for the fall cohort of “Bright Futures” students begin on September 2.

At the Open House, those seeking an education leading to careers in the energy field will meet with representatives from Con Edison, New York Power Authority, and Solar City who will discuss their need for skilled technicians and engineers. College faculty and Admissions staffers will share details on how our various academic programs prepare students for high salary careers.

The college has expanded its “Bright Futures” academic programs to include Civil Technology, Electrical TechnologyEnergy SystemsEngineering ScienceEnvironmental Science,Environmental Studies, and Mechanical Technology. The programs are organized under the “Bright Futures” title partly because many of the academic majors relate to careers that will ensure that we have the “bright” power we need in modern society. But it’s also because there are a tremendous number of job openings in each of these energy, engineering technology, and sustainability fields.

Westchester Community College, in conjunction with Con Edison, initiated the Bright Futures program. In addition to the curriculum of foundational and state of the art courses that meet current industry expectations, the various programs strengthen students’ employability with career development and soft skills through classes and meetings with industry representatives, visits to industry sites, and further opportunities to develop career-ready skills necessary for entry-level positions.
