The county executive said it was good news, but residents aren't out of the woods yet.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — The number of coronavirus infections continues to decrease, according to updated numbers from Westchester County.

During his Thursday news briefing, County Executive George Latimer said, to date, the county has seen 99,984 total positive cases of the virus, as of Wednesday's numbers.

The number of active cases of the virus is now under 8,000. Latimer said as recently as Jan. 21 there were more than 11,000.

"That is good news," he said. "Now we're on the downslope."

Latimer said it was encouraging that the number of active cases is down, but "we are by no means out of the woods."

He said the county has come through the holiday peaks and is now waiting to see if there's a spike from Super Bowl weekend.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 related illness, as of Tuesday, are 489, which is down from the last few weeks, Latimer said.

The total number of deaths in the county from the beginning of the pandemic is now 2,002. There were 54 deaths in the past week, compared to 73 in the prior week, he said.

"That number is heading in the right direction," Latimer said.

To date, there have been 37,670 vaccinations at the Westchester County Center — more than 1,000 per day.

The number now includes the administration of second doses as well as first doses, Latimer said.

The county clinic and Westchester Community College have doled out more than 7,600 vaccinations, 1,000 of which have been second doses.
