White Plains Accountant Pleads Guilty To Tax Fraud

Authorities said he filed false returns to the tune of $23 million in tax credits.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — A certified public accountant had pleaded guilty to tax fraud charges Wednesday.

Joon H. Kim, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said Joseph Cervone, 63, of White Plains, pleaded guilty to one count of endeavoring to obstruct and impede the due administration of IRS laws and one count of subscribing to false tax returns.

Cervone, who has an office in White Plains, filed false tax returns from 2009 through 2012 to the IRS claiming more than $23 million of energy and coal credits on behalf of his clients in order to obtain tax refunds.

Additionally, he also filed false tax returns for the years 2010 and 2011 that failed to report more than $500,000 in income.

Each of the counts carries a maximum potential sentence of three years in prison.

Cervone is scheduled to be sentenced June 29, 2017.
