White Plains among Area High Schools Succeeding by 'Beating the Odds'
Newsweek this week released a list of high schools across the country that are finding success despite challenges.

Newsweek on Wednesday published its list of top high schools nationwide, alongside a second set of rankings that comes with a twist.
In addition to its Top 500 schools list, Newsweek compiled “Beating the Odds” rankings, a look at schools that excel despite economic and other obstacles.
White Plains High School came in at #454, according to Newsweek.

The other Westchester County schools to make the list were Fox Lane in Bedford, Yonkers and Lincoln high schools in Yonkers, Rye Neck High School (which made both lists), Sleepy Hollow High School and Port Chester High School.

- Northside College Preparatory HS (Chicago, IL)
- Transmountain Early College HS (El Paso, TX)
- The Brooklyn Latin School (Brooklyn, NY)
- West St. John High School (Edgard, LA)
- Townsend Harris High School (Flushing, NY)
- Payton College Preparatory HS (Chicago, IL)
- Hollis F. Price Middle College High School (Memphis, TN)
- San Gabriel High (San Gabriel, CA)
- Valley View HS (Pharr, TX)
There are almost 30,000 public high schools in the United States, and Newsweek’s rankings were compiled using several metrics, including graduation rate, college enrollment rate and SAT and ACT scores. Additionally, the rankings looked at AP and IB scores and participation, teacher-student ratio and dropout rates.
