White Plains Math Teacher Honored By Yale University

The award honors outstanding educators who have deeply impacted students' lives.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — A math teacher at White Plains High School has been honored by Yale University. Cindy Phillips, who has taught at the high school for 16 years, was selected to receive the 2018 Yale Educator Award.

The award is based on nominations from students entering Yale's Class of 2022, who were asked to suggest outstanding educators who have deeply impacted their lives.

The award recognizes educators from around the world who inspire and support their students to perform at high levels and to achieve excellence.

Phillips currently teaches advanced placement calculus BC, multivariable calculus and precalculus honors.

She was named a fellow in the Academy for Teachers in 2017 and received the Alice Artzt Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching at Queens College in 2000.

Phillips was nominated by Anna Tender, a freshman at Yale University who graduated from White Plains High School in 2018.

Of this year's 371 nominees, representing 42 states and 12 countries, 59 teachers and 28 counselors were selected to receive the award.

The winners were sent engraved desk sets and congratulatory letters, and the administrators of the high schools were notified of the achievement.
