White Plains Police Officer Dragged by Car While Trying to Make an Arrest

The officer was dragged about 100 feet before being thrown to the ground.

A White Plains police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries early Sunday morning after he was dragged about 100 feet by a car while he was trying to make an arrest, according to the city’s Public Safety Commissioner David Chong.

The officer, who was not identified by police, was treated at White Plains Hospital and released.

He was trying to apprehend 38-year-old Mount Kisco resident Nino Valvano, after Valvano was suspected to have a weapon outside of Lola’s Restaurant. Police said Valvano had been thrown out of the restaurant for allegedly being unruly, and he went to his car and appeared to stick something into the waistband of his pants, according to witnesses.

As police arrived, Valvano tried to drive away when the officer was dragged. Chong said Valvano then led police on a chase onto I-287 before stopping and surrendering. He called the department’s 911 dispatch during the chase and was talked into surrendering, according to Chong.

“This incident is a prime example of the daily dangers that our police officers face,” said Chong in a statement, adding that the investigation is continuing and a weapon has not yet been recovered. “I am proud of the way the men and women of the WPPD handled this incident.”
