I thought I was going crazy. This past week, I kept seeing more runners than usual around the neighborhood, and it seemed like they were all wearing t-shirts with police or fire insignias on them.
It turns out the 2011 World Police & Fire Games are taking place from August 26 to September 5. It's like the Olympics, but just for police officers and firefighters, and more than 15,000 of them are descending on New York City to compete in a wide variety of sports all over the five boroughs.
Tomorrow is the Opening Ceremonies, which is taking place in Prospect Park starting at 1pm. It's a closed event, for athletes and their guests only, but now you'll know why there seem to be so many athletic police and firemen in the neighborhood!
