66% of New York City Adults Like Bike Lanes
In an NY1-Marist poll released today, the majority of New York City residents polled say they support bike lanes in the city. NY1 spoke with people about it at the Prospect Park West bike lane, and one guy pointed from the bike lane to the sidewalk expressed something that seemed to come out in the poll:
"I think the bike lanes are a good idea. I'm not a fan of people who don't listen to the idea of the bike lane, who basically, you have a bike lane set up for them and yet they're still riding on the street," said another.
Even so, 40% say such lanes make traffic worse, while 30% say they make no difference at all, and 5% are unsure.
The poll also asked how respectful people think drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are: 78% thought taxi drivers could be better about sharing the road, 46% think cyclists aren't so respectful (because they're, say, riding on the sidewalk). People like bus drivers, though--67% think they are respectful. It's iffy on pedestrians, as only 51% of people think they are considerate about sharing the road.
