Adult Accent Reduction Class at the Y

The Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace has quickly become a great spot for classes and activities for both children and adults. This upcoming course on adult accent reduction from Victoria Lavington, M.A., CCC-SLP, is a perfect example of the broad range of classes that are available there:

Are you proficient in the English language but feel that your foreign or regional accent impedes your professional or personal communication skills? Do business colleagues or acquaintances frequently have to ask you to repeat yourself? Do you have difficulty making yourself understood during telephone conversations?

Accent reduction classes can help you to greatly reduce your accent and acquire a standard American accent. This course will identify the sounds and intonation patterns that vary from a Standard American Accent and teach you how to correctly produce those sounds. Through targeted exercises progressing from the phoneme, to the word, to the sentence, and finally to the conversation, this course will systematically guide you towards attaining the communication skills that you desire. Speech samples will be recorded both at the beginning and the end of the course to demonstrate your degree of improvement…typically a 50% reduction in accent is achieved.
