Quel surprise! I was thinking about Chuck Ramkissoon, the Trinadadian cricket player in the novel Netherland, as I walked toward the baseball diamond at the Parade ground. Instead I found a group of men playing pétanique, many speaking French, some Caribbean, and a few sporting white shirts saying Amicales des Boulistes Saint Barthélemy, at Bowling Green Park, off Coney Island Avenue and Kermit Place, near Caton.
It was the monthly pétanique tournament organized by the New York Pétanique Club and La Boule New Yorkaise, and sponsored by Ricard. Saturday morning at 11 a.m. about 50 people were there watching or playing on 12 courts—and some women too. The tournament continues Sunday starting around 9:15 a.m.
Tournaments are held once a month and practice every Saturday. The next tournament will take place Bastille Day, July 14 on Smith Street, but in August the tournament will be back at Bowling Green Park.
