Argyle Yarn Shop Now Open on Prospect Park West

Argyle Yarn Shop officially opened yesterday at 288 Prospect Park West, between 17th and 18th Streets. Husband and wife owners David and Esther Betten have done a lovely job with the large space--which you may remember was previously a prosthetics shop--which now has large windows in front to let in a ton of light, a dedicated space to sit and socialize and learn, and room for an expansion that the couple already has planned for next year.

And of course, tons of yarn. There's already a wide selection, with more to come. Esther explains that they want to stock a variety so that there is something for everyone's tastes, even when those tastes change for an individual.

"Sometimes you want something inexpensive, and a lot of it," she says, "and sometimes you want something with a little cashmere in it to make something that impresses your mother-in-law."



They hope to start hosting meet-ups and offer classes beginning in the next few months, and would love to hear what people are interested in seeing at the shop. For now, Esther, who has been knitting for years, can offer pattern advice and tips, while David is eager to start learning his way around some needles.

They also live nearby, and are proud to be a part of the neighborhood as a business now as well. They've already shown some neighborhood support by contributing to the PS 154 “Building the Future Together” campaign, and they're looking forward to building strong ties to the area.

"A lot of neighbors are coming in to check out the store, and we love meeting everyone," David says. "We've gotten so much good support already."

If you're not crafty, but you know someone who is, be sure to stop in for your holiday shopping after Thanksgiving. American Express recently dubbed the Saturday after the holiday "Small Business Saturday" to encourage shoppers to support independently owned businesses such as Argyle Yarn Shop. They will be closed on Thanksgiving, but open the rest of the weekend following.
