Living in one of the most diverse neighborhoods makes it difficult not to follow international politics, and while this blog is not about to become a spot for all things about all places, I do wish to pass this on to our Belarusian neighbors, and those who feel strongly about human rights violations in Belarus, about a demonstration tomorrow in Manhattan.
Sponsored by the Public Theater and Amnesty International USA, at the Mission of the Republic of Belarus to the UN. Meet at the southwest corner of E67th street and Lexington Avenue, tomorrow, January 19th, 12pm-1pm.
Please come out and stand with the brave people of Belarus for what is right. In Belarus there is a huge human cost to speaking our and standing up for what folks take for granted over here. I grew up in Latvia, next door to Belarus in the 90s, and can tell you first hand - symbolic gestures by people far away do make a huge statement to people on the ground that they are not alone. That they are not forgotten. That we care. That their suffering is not in vein.
If you can't make it to the demonstration, consider signing the petition to express your support. It matters.
More on Belarus Free Theatre here, NY Times on their production of Being Harold Pinter here, and on the cruelty of the regime here.
