Best Home Delivery of Organic Produce in Brooklyn

In the past few years I've gotten big into home delivery. With two small kids and a full-time job, there just isn't enough time to shop. Or when there is, I'd rather be doing other things than standing in line at Fairway or walking the 3 miles round-trip to the Greenmarket.

So I recently decided to try Urban Organic, a Brooklyn-based online grocer that delivers organic produce and groceries. Much like a CSA, you pay for a box, and you get a what's available--though you do have some options for omissions or customization. I wasn't sure what to expect since I've been a member of enough CSAs to know variety and quantity can be hit or miss. I was happily surprised with what we got in this week's order. Here's a breakdown of how the contents of our Urban Organic "Original Value Box" compares to FreshDirect organic produce:



Urban Organic clearly beats FreshDirect with price, coming out $10 cheaper. However, in Brooklyn there is only one delivery day--Tuesdays--so if it's pure convenience you're after FreshDirect wins with more delivery days and times.

Even though Urban Organic is cheaper than FreshDirect, it's still expensive since it's organic. I would like to buy all organic for my family but to save money tend to follow the EWG's super handy Shopper's Guide to Pesticides which tells you which items are worth the splurge for organic and which ones are safe enough conventionally-grown.
