Minerva: Facing What?
On August 27, 1920, the 144th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, a sculpture of Minerva was unveiled on Green-Wood's Battle Hill. But Minerva was not always set to salute the Statue of Liberty.

On August 27, 1920, the 144th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, the first battle of the American Revolution after the Declaration of Independence was issued and the largest battle of that war, a bronze sculpture of Minerva was unveiled on Green-Wood’s Battle Hill.
Tour guides have long told visitors that Minerva faces the Statue of Liberty, which had been placed on Liberty Island in 1886, a gift from the French people. And that is indeed the case. But, as we have just learned, it was not always a given that Minerva would be facing, and saluting, her sister in the harbor.
