Open Houses are one of the best ways for prospective families to get to know our BASIS Independent Brooklyn community. They offer the opportunity to walk through our halls and classrooms, meeting school leadership, hearing from teachers, and getting to know our parents.

Doors will open at 9:40 AM, and the event will last approximately until 12:00 PM. We welcome you to register and attend even if you are not able to participate in the entire event. Students are encouraged to join us, as well.
Our Open House will begin with an Introduction and an Overview. This will include a Parent Panel where you will be able to hear from current BASIS Independent Brooklyn families. Families will also be able to tour the campus while visiting classrooms.
PreK &amp; Kindergarten Learn about our Early Learning Program, where our youngest students grow. Hear from teachers, administrators, and parents about how BASIS Independent Brooklyn Lower School fosters curiosity, exploration, and creativity. Our passionate Subject Expert Teachers will show you what a day in the life looks like as they lead mini-lessons in their vibrant rooms. Grades 1-2: Visit with our Learning Expert and Subject Expect Teachers to learn about our unique two-teacher model. From math and science to humanities, Mandarin, music and more, find out how we support students in developing study skills and spark a lifelong love of learning. Our Subject Expert Teachers will lead mini-lessons to help you get a feel for the engaging activities that take place in the classrooms. These sessions will also help you understand the transition to our Upper School campus in Grade 3.

Cult Film Director Christopher Wells Launches “Weird Short Films Festival” in Brooklyn—Bridging the Gap Between Live Cinema and Viral Global Reach

 Christopher Wells, director of the psychological thriller The Luring, announces the inaugural Weird Short Films Festival, a new sanctuary for cinema that exists outside the grasp of proper society. Launching April 18th at Brooklyn’s Vino Theater, the festival brings the dark, the surreal, and the "weird" to the red carpet and the big screen. The event serves as a curated showcase for the unconventional, specifically celebrating horror, B-horror, psychological thrillers, and dark comedies.

With doors opening at 4:20 PM, the festival promises a bizarre selection of boundary-pushing shorts, offering filmmakers a platform that extends far beyond the theater walls. By leveraging the Weird Short Films YouTube channel, creators gain the chance to reach a global community of 180,000 subscribers. It is a one-of-a-kind destination where independent genre filmmakers bridge the gap between underground cult status and a premiere industry experience.

Unlike traditional indie festivals where talent often remains behind the scenes, Weird Short Films leans heavily into the "VIP Filmmaker” experience. Attendees and creators alike will walk the red carpet and participate in interviews that will be featured on the festival’s massive digital platform. The event will feature swag bags, awards, live burlesque, and an immersive after-party. Every guest will receive a special gift, as Wells believes in a 'culture of giving' intended to inspire the audience to share their experience and generate the hype these films deserve. Major horror and prominent lifestyle influencers will be in attendance to celebrate the night.

For those attending in person, the festival offers a "mind-expanding" itinerary at the industrial Vino Theater.&nbsp;

Two Film Blocks: A curated selection of weird, scary, and hilariously dark cinema.

Live Entertainment: Performances by burlesque artists and an immersive after-party until 10:00 PM.

Inclusive Vibe: A safe, LGBTQI+ friendly space with a dress code themed: "Perplexed, Happy High-Fives."

"Our main goal is to provide a massive platform for these filmmakers," says founder Christopher Wells. "The live screening is an incredible night, but the YouTube channel is where these stories live on. We want our filmmakers to be stars both on and off the screen."

The Primary Program: Grades 3-5 Visit our Learning Expert and Subject Expect Teachers to learn about our unique two-teacher model (for grades 3 &amp; 4). From math and science to humanities, Mandarin, music, and more, find out how we support students in developing study skills and spark a lifelong love of learning. You will also have the chance to learn about how these bridge years encourage autonomy, creativity, and confidence to help prepare your student for Middle School. The Middle School Program: Grades 6-8 In the Middle School Program, we focus on developing the academic, executive functioning, and self-advocacy skills needed for success in the high school years. Hear from our Subject Expert Teachers about how they inspire excellence inside and outside the classroom. Plus, learn about our many athletic and academic competition teams, clubs, international trips, and more. The High School Program: Grades 9-12 Educating tomorrow’s great innovators, pioneers, and leaders requires a well-rounded curriculum – one with breadth and depth across academic disciplines. Meet students, faculty, and administrators as you and your child learn about high school at BASIS Independent Brooklyn, including our unique Senior Year program.

Brooklyn Conservatory of Music

The OMNI Ensemble is pleased to announce the conclusion of its 43rd season at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music on Saturday evening, May 2, 2026 at 8:00 pm. Music Director/Flutist David Wechsler will host an evening of woodwind quintet and piano music. Compositions are Karel Husa’s Serenade for woodwind quintet and piano, Valerie Coleman’s Afro Cuban Concerto for wind quintet, Chen Yi’s Woodwind Quintet, and David Wechsler’s Divertimento
for Wind Quintet and Piano. Assisting musicians are Elizabeth Kieronski - oboe, Jeffrey Adler - clarinet, Atsuko Sato – bassoon, Eric David - horn, and Sylvia Kahan, piano. 
Continuing as the chamber music group in residence at the Brooklyn Conservatory, The OMNI Ensemble will continue to perform concerts of enormous variety all designed to provide their audience with a musical diversity not ordinarily encountered by one chamber music group. Throughout the season they perform in the recital hall at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. 

Tickets at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music are $25.00, $15.00 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available in advance on the OMNI Ensemble website or at the door prior to the performance.

The OMNI Ensemble is a chamber music created to perform programs of enormous variety, with music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century, including Western classical music, jazz, and electronic and improvised music, all designed to provide their audience with a musical experience not ordinarily encountered in a single music event. Since its inception in 1983 the group has featured many guest artists including multi instrumentalist/composer David Amram, performance artist John Kelley, Singer Erika Banks, Kumongo player Jin Hi Kim, Saxophonist Roy Nathanson, Mezzo Sopranos Catherine Ciesinski and Charlotte Hellekant, Harpsichordists Gerald Ranck and Rebecca Pechefsky, and keyboardist Marco Benevento. The group has commissioned works by David Lang, Lee Hyla, Allen Shearson, &amp; Michael Bushnell, and performed new pieces by Jim Lahti, Eric Klein, and David Wechsler.
