Tomorrow is June 'teenth, the day the slaves were freed in Texas, a Texan friend told me years ago. In his version it took several years for the news to reached black folks there.
Today in the is a really good—and thorough—article on June 'teenth and the freeing of slaves, including New York's. (Did you know Brooklyn was second only to Charleston SC in the number of slaves owned?) It is being celebrated today at the 11th Annual Ft. Greene Juneteenth Arts Festival at Cuyler Gore Park between noon and 6 p.m. The event is being produced by Urban Bush Women, a dance group. They are well worth a detour if you've never seen them perform, or even if you have. All the activities are free. The park is located at the intersection of Fulton St, South Oxford St and Greene Ave. Only problem: the G isn't working.
