Community Gathers to Protect Prospect Park Geese

Worried about the safety of H9Z4 (aka Pierre) and all his friends? An event called “Hands Around the Lake” takes place in Prospect Park later this month to "implore the city to end its ongoing goose-eradication contract with the federal agency that secretly slaughtered hundreds of waterfowl last summer and is preparing to do so again if the goose population cannot be controlled," says the Brooklyn Paper.

Last summer more than 300 geese were killed at the park to, theoretically, protect airplanes in the vicinity from "bird strikes." Whether or not killing the birds in this area keeps geese from running into planes is not clear, but there are other ways to control the goose population in the park:

The effort includes destroying goose eggs before embryos can form, deploying bird-chasing dogs, and discouraging park-goers from feeding the fowl.

But it’s unclear if the initiative will be successful. Federal officials have said that if the population remains in the hundreds, it is likely that another “culling” will be necessary.

If you're interested in joining State Senator Eric Adams and other area bird lovers, the Hands Around the Lake meeting point is at the Prospect Park well house, just inside the entrance at Vanderbilt Street and Prospect Park Southwest, March 26, 12:30 pm.
