Composting for Kensington

With a mission to transform the wasteland of a lot on Newkirk and E8th, a bunch of neighbors have teamed up and are turning the lot into a place of green urban refuge, and re-use - by building space to compost neighborhood scraps:

Compost for Brooklyn will encourage the sustainable disposal of food scraps and related organic waste in Kensington, Brooklyn. We will transform a vacant lot into a garden, planted with native floral species. The garden will host a series of composting bins and in-vessel composting units which will accept drop-offs from area residents and restaurants. The compost produced will be distributed to public gardens and private gardeners across the five boroughs to encourage green spaces to bloom throughout New York City.

The garden will reclaim the draggled remains of a parking area, left to collect litter. We will till the soil and plant flowering trees, herbaceous shrubs, and ornamental flowers to beautify the newly created green space and to attract birds and butterflies. The space will also serve as an educational facility. We will host groups of interested students and community organizations to instruct them on the essentials of gardening and the process of composting.

The composting process will be conducted in outdoor bins and in in-vessel composting units. The outdoor bins will be constructed out of palates and other salvaged and reused materials. They will serve as educational models for the community to demonstrate the manner by which compost bins can be built and maintained while incurring minimal expense. The in-vessel composting units will emit no odors. They will be quiet and carbon efficient. The in-vessel composting system will ensure the rapid decomposition of organic materials and the creation of the highest quality compost.
