In spring, even the thoughts of seasoned real-estate developers turn to green, as in greening up and leafing out, not money! Under all that snow, these thoughts sunk deep roots into the ice crevices, corroding past resistance, buckling cement. Today they exploded in an announcement by Southern Brooklyn Community Organization (SBCO) and its architects to hire Hester Street Collaborative to design Culver El Estates’ streets and public spaces.
Where now we have this,
expect to see this in a year or two, between 12th and 13th avenues.
Zoning lot 109-110, now slated to be a parking lot, will become a landscaped mall for use by Culver El Estate residents and neighbors.
Rooftops will be reconfigured as play areas.
Undoubtedly seasonal thoughts of redemption and renewal linked to Pâques (Passover and Easter) gave birth to this next decision: SBCO will install a level soccer field on 36th Street in honor of the Ecuadorian soccer teams' 40-yr old tradition of weekly Friday night games. This summer when the new field opens for play, the Ecuadorians plan to celebrate with a mass, followed by a procession of soccer players, bands, and dancing neighbors. Be sure to put it on your calendar.
