DI Sprague Reflects on the Diversity of the 66th Precinct
The 66th Precinct covers a very diverse area that includes large Jewish, Asian, and Middle Eastern communities, to name a few. In an interview with Hamodia, the precinct's Commanding Officer, Deputy Inspector John J. Sprague, says that the groups get along in part because of the police department's availability and sensitivity to each group.
He also addresses the Leiby Kletzy case, and notes what steps the precinct in taking to educate children about safety:
We had to make them - and their parents - understand that it’s a hard, cold fact that you’re still living in Brooklyn, USA. There’s not some invisible line that lets everything be homogeneous and good here. This is a quiet precinct - in fact, in terms of safety per capita, it’s one of New York’s three highest-rated precincts. But bad people can still come in here, and you should never let your guard down. As parents we want our kids to be independent, which is excellent, but keep in mind that this is a very different world than the one that you and I grew up in.
Be sure to check out the rest of the interview, where DI Sprague talks about Shomrim, terrorism, and Jewish/Muslim relations in the neighborhood.
