Fixing Coney Island Avenue

Fixing Coney Island Avenue

Just over a year ago, we posted here and over on the Ditmas Park Blog that the Church Avenue BID had asked the Pratt Center to develop a vision for Coney Island Avenue.

Many people weighed in in the comments section, many attended the follow-up meetings, and more than 300 people filled out a survey.

The resulting study has been completed -- you can see the whole thing below -- and has a detailed list of recommendations, summarized as:

1) Encourage community-building efforts through an advocacy group

2) Build the capacity to to plan for future development

3) Make the corridor more functional for all users, including pedestrians, bus riders, and drivers

4) Improve streetscape conditions

5) Create a gateway to Coney Island Avenue

The details include everything from planting trees to lobbying the Department of Transportation to do something about the various obvious hazards -- and, of course, getting the cars off the sidewalk.
